Nvidia starts pushing 3D videos on YouTube

If you have a device capable of displaying 3D video, and you’ve been hurting for a place to put it to good use, look no further than YouTube. YouTube and Nvidia have partnered to start posting and hosting 3D videos that can be viewed on any 3D capable device, like the Nintendo 3DS, the T-Mobile G-Slate 3D, the LG Optimus 3D, and others.
Of course, in order to view 3D videos, you’ll need the right browser, the right graphics hardware, and a pair of 3D glasses, all of which Nvidia is more than happy to provide you with if you’re interested. For example, if you want to watch the 3D videos on your desktop computer, if you’re not already 3D-equipped you’ll have to buy an Nvidia GeForce GPU, a 3D Vision capable monitor or projector, 3D Vision glasses, and a 3D Vision IR emitter. You’ll also have to use Firefox 4 or higher, and have up-to-date Nvidia graphics drivers.

If that seems like a lot of gear just to watch 3D videos on YouTube, you’d be absolutely correct. Nvidia makes the case that more and more 3D video is making its way on the Web, and if you want to watch any of it, you’ll need the right equipment. 3D video and 3D devices aren’t just a passing fad, they say. Plus, even if you don’t always use the 3D gear, if you have an Nvidia GPU in your system and the equipment on standby, you can enjoy it when you want it.
Most analysts have already said that 3D TV and Blu-Ray will probably stick around, even if they turn into “checkbox” features that no manufacturer would come to market without. The jury is still out on whether the 3D trend will carry to PCs and stick, especially since there aren’t terribly many major supporters of the technology aside from Nvidia. YouTube, for its part, knows it has the capability to stream 3D videos, and is likely looking at it as a way to offer streaming video to even more customers on more devices, nothing more.

PlayStation Store set to return May 24

The PlayStation Network has slowly been stumbling back online. First developers started to seesigns of life, then Sony turned parts back on for gamers. Two days after doing so an issue was found with the password reset that allowed anyone with your email address and date of birth to take control of your account. In response, Sony took access to some of its websites and the password reset page offline again.
The good news is, PSN is coming back slowly, and now we have found out we can expect to get the PlayStation Store back online come May 24.
That news comes via a memo Sony sent to developers and publishers explaining its plans. The date is still tentative as it will only be honored if no more issues occur. If it does go ahead, expect a lot of new content to appear over the coming weeks.
Being offline for three weeks has meant new content planned for release has built up. So Sony is going to release it in batches a couple of times a week for a few weeks. When they have caught up we will go back to a regular schedule.
The planned batch releases will occur on May 24 and 27, then May 31 and June 3. The release schedule will be the same as was originally intended, but publishers can ask for it to be changed if there is a good reason for doing so.
The PlayStation Store is one of the most important areas of PSN. Sony, develoeprs, and publishers count on it for revenue, while gamers use it to purchase digital games and get DLC. Having it come back online should help calm angry gamers, but it should also allow Sony to start saying sorry by offering free games to everyone.

Modern Warfare 3 will hit store shelves just in time for the holiday shopping season this November, according to news obtained and released by Kotaku. According to the blog, “multiple sources” have confirmed that the game will be released on November 8th, 2011 and will pick up where Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 left off, completely changing the way people perceive the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare shooter franchise.
Here’s what we know: Modern Warfare 3 will span the globe, much like the previous game. The player will fight street battles in major cities like London, Paris, and New York, and many of those awe-inspiring places will be open for the game’s multiplayer modes. Modern Warfare 3 will also reportedly tie up a number of loose ends from the previous two games that left players hanging, and pick up almost immediately after the cliffhanger ending of Modern Warfare 2.
The game will reportedly start us off in New York City as the Russians attempt to invade the United States, and eventually take us around the world through 15 missions as multiple characters until we get to the game’s climactic final mission in Dubai. Gamers will be able to play characters on all sides of the conflict, and control multiple vehicles new and old, and tons of new weapons and hardware.
Multiplayer also makes a strong comeback in Modern Warfare 3, and even includes new game types and tons of new maps in addition to some of the older, more familiar multiplayer modes. None of Kotaku’s information has been confirmed by Activision yet, but it all looks solid, and it is unlikely Activision will stay quiet for long with this much information out in the wild.

Google’s Chrome browser has finally been hacked

This video shows a sophisticated 0-Day exploit created by VUPEN to execute arbitrary code on Google Chrome bypassing its sandbox, ASLR and DEP.

One browser you will notice is missing from that list is Google Chrome, the reason being its sandbox security measures have made it very tough to crack.
In fact, Google uses three types of security measure in Chrome that make it very difficult to exploit. They consist of Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), Data Execution Prevention (DEP), and the most commonly referred to sandbox.
ASLR means the data used for the executable, libraries, heap, stack, and address space are never in the same location twice in memory. This makes predictions tough for the hacker making certain types of exploit very difficult if not impossible to use. DEP stops code execution from a non-executable memory region which means the common buffer overflow exploits don’t work. Finally we have the sandbox, which sees each tab you open in Chrome get its own process and is stripped of its rights meaning it can’t affect anything other than itself on the system and in the browser.
Tough as all those measures sound and indeed are, Chrome has had its sandbox compromised this week by security company VUPEN. The video above shows the hack using a sophisticated zero-day exploit that manages to run arbitrary code through the browser. Most importantly, it bypasses the sandbox, ASLR, and DEP security measures.
The exploit works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems and executes silently meaning it can be used without the browser or system crashing. In order for it to work a user would just have to visit a website created to take advantage of the vulnerabilities.
As it uses new zero-day vulnerabilities VUPEN has discovered, it would be possible to use it on the most recent version of Chrome most of us end users will be running. However, for that to happen VUPEN would need to make the exploit public which it has no intention of doing. The only other way this could be used in the wild is if some other hacker has managed to find the same or similar exploits. Let’s hope not.

Fox.com hacked, X-Factor contestant details leaked

Fox.com hacked.

While all the attention is laser-focused on the Sony PSN and SOE hacks, other high-profile sites and databases are being targeted and compromised by hackers.
The latest to fall is Fox.com and with it the most personal of details about every X-Factor 2011 contestant. The details available for each contestant includes:
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Gender
  • Phone Number
  • Location (State)
  • Zip Code
  • Audition type
  • Number of performers
  • Several unnamed optional fields
The hacker group which compromised the site and grabbed the database goes by the name of The Lulz Boat or more commonly LulzSec. They describe themselves as a small group who are separate from the likes of Anonymous, but may help them out from time to time.
The announcement of the information leak came via the LulzSec Twitter account and included a link to a torrent hosted on The Pirate Bay containing all the data. It seems Fox.com hasn’t been defaced in anyway, and LulzSec were just after information they could steal and post for everyone to see. They have also promised that there is more to come, so who knows what else they managed to grab from Fox’s servers.
While not a major breach on the scale of Sony’s current woes, it does show that some of the most popular networks out there are lax with their website and online security in general.
We suspect a few of those contestants will have already turned their phones off having received many prank calls from people downloading the list and checking its authenticity.

Ultimate Extras make an unfortunate return to Windows 8

The History Vault looks like it could really come in handy on the computers I administer (both at home and at work), the cloud profile synchronization will make switching between my desktop and laptop much more seamless, and the Windows Storeis set to provide a more convenient way for average users to discover and download new programs. With Windows 7, Microsoft did a very good job of fixing the annoyances created by Vista, and while the list of irritation in Windows 7 is substantially shorter, I think most of us are still hoping that Windows 8 is just as big a step forward as Windows 7 was.
What I don’t want to see is the return of past annoyances — like Ultimate Extras, for example, whichWinRumors says could very well make an unceremonious return in Windows 8.
In case you’re too young to remember or merely tried to block all recollection, Ultimate Extras was one of the biggest disappointments ever pushed by Microsoft. Users ponied up multiple hundreds of dollars for Vista Ultimate, partly because of the promise of awesome, exclusive content that would be made available via Windows Update later on. In the end, a handful of games was about all Ultimate users had to show for their hard-earned cash.
Now, Ultimate Extras have re-appeared in the leaked Windows 8 builds which are being shared on torrent sites. It’s my sincere hope that one of the two situations is true here:
  1. This is only happening because Windows 8 is still in the very early stages of development, and Ultimate Extras won’t be part of the final release.
  2. Microsoft does plan on offering Ultimate Extras in Windows 8, only this time they’ve learned their lesson and will offers some seriously amazing downloads.
If neither of those turns out to be true, Microsoft will further alienate Windows enthusiasts. People who are willing to pay the inflated price for a tricked-out version of an operating system need to be handled like VIPs — not forgotten about and left holding the bag.

Redbox kiosks to offer video game rentals

If you thought that Redbox kiosks were only good for snagging a movie to watch on the way home from a long day at work, get ready to think again. The famous red disc-dispensing kiosks will start spitting out video games starting on June 17th, offering titles for the PlayStation3Xbox 360, andNintendo Wii for $2 per day.
The new game rentals have been in testing at about 5,000 locations around the country for some time now, but Redbox says they’re finally ready to expand the program to their other 21,000 kiosks. According to the press release, video games will be introduced at the same time as Blu-Ray discs at Redbox locations nationwide. “Redbox will make discovering the latest games as easy as a trip to the local grocery, convenience, or drug store,” according to Redbox’s VP of Games, Joel Resnik.
It’s difficult for Redbox’s move not to be seen as a shot across the bow of companies that also rent games, like GameFly and Blockbuster (the latter now owned by Dish Network.) Blockbuster is the only competitor that has a local kiosk presence to compete with Redbox, while GameFly’s business model relies entirely on disc-by-mail.
It’s also clear that Redbox isn’t about to take the threat from a newly purchased Blockbuster lightly, and is looking for ways to differentiate itself from other services like Blockbuster and Netflix. Next month, it’ll be as easy as walking up to the kiosk outside your local convenience store to pick up a game you’ve wanted to try but didn’t want to buy. At $2/day, it won’t even hurt so much if the only way you can return it is to wait until your local grocery store is open the next day so you get access to the kiosk to drop off your disc.

Beyond the Labyrinth on 3DS looks gorgeous

Nintendo released the 3DS with the big selling point being the 3D without glasses. But it’s easy to forget, especially with the current crop of games, that the hardware offers up a lot of graphical performance over what the DS could ever achieve. It’s no PSP 2 (NGP), but it can produce some stunning visuals.
If you need proof of that look no further than the latest batch of screenshots for Beyond the Labyrinth. Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has just posted them on its website and I think you’ll agree we should all start expecting better looking games on the platform.
The visuals remind us a lot of Ico, which is no bad thing. As for the story and gameplay it looks to be a 3D dungeon type affair with the main character being a young girl as seen in the images. Apparently she will be very vocal as you play through the game suggesting she might be the hint system and this is a game with some maze-like navigation puzzles.
Beyond the Labyrinth is being published by Konami and developed by tri-Ace. Previous titles from them include the Star OceanValkyria Profile, and Resonance of Fate.
We don’t know when the game will be released, but it is thought to be around 60% finished making us think a mid-2012 launch is on the cards.

The $23,698,655.93 book on Amazon . Why ?

A textbook on Amazon was recently listed at more than $23 million. As it turns out, an algorithm was to blame.
College students have long complained that text books cost too much. But woe is the poor sap who has to pick up a copy of genetics textbook, The Making of a Fly, by Peter Lawrence, which was recently listed at the ridiculous price of $23,698,655.93 on Amazon.com.
The absurd price of this out-of-print book, first published in 1992, was discovered by UC Berkley evolutionary biologist Michael Eisen, who went to Amazon to purchase the book. There, he found “17 copies for sale: 15 used from $35.54, and 2 new from $1,730,045.91 (+$3.99 shipping).”
“At first I thought it was a joke –- a graduate student with too much time on their hands,” writes Eisen on his blog. “But there were TWO new copies for sale, each be offered for well over a million dollars. And the two sellers seemed not only legit, but fairly big time (over 8,000 and 125,000 ratings in the last year respectively). The prices looked random –- suggesting they were set by a computer. But how did they get so out of whack?”
To Eisen’s surprise, the price of the new copies actually rose the next day to nearly $28 million apiece. Adding to the peculiarity of the situation was that the difference between the price of the two new copies closed from $400,000 to about $5,000. “Now I was intrigued, and I started to follow the page incessantly,” writes Eisen. “By the end of the day the higher priced copy had gone up again. This time to $3,536,675.57. And now a pattern was emerging.”
What Eisen discovered is that Amazon sellers are using algorithms to set the price of the products they sell. Each day, one seller, profnath, would adjust its price of The Making of the Fly to be 0.9983 times the price of the other seller, bordeebooks. In response, bordeebooks would inflate its price by 1.270589 times profnath’s price. Eventually, the two sellers’ pricing algorithms elevated the cost of the textbook to hilarious levels.
“Both profnath and bordeebook were clearly using automatic pricing – employing algorithms that didn’t have a built-in sanity check on the prices they produced,” writes Eisen. “But the two retailers were clearly employing different strategies.”
Indeed. While profnath’s strategy seemed perfectly reasonable — set the price of its book just slightly lower than that of a competitor — bordeebook automatically made sure its listing was more expensive than any other seller. Not exactly the best strategy for drawing in customers. So why would bordeebook, a seller with highly positive reviews, employ such a strange tactic?
“My preferred explanation for bordeebook’s pricing is that they do not actually possess the book,” writes Eisen. “Rather, they noticed that someone else listed a copy for sale, and so they put it up as well –- relying on their better feedback record to attract buyers. But, of course, if someone actually orders the book, they have to get it – so they have to set their price significantly higher – say 1.27059 times higher – than the price they’d have to pay to get the book elsewhere.”
Ultimately, Eisen brought attention to the staggering pricing mishap, and profnath dropped its price to the far more reasonable $106.23. (Bordeebook’s price was still 1.27059 times higher than profnath’s, at $134.97.) But this curious tale serves as a perfect example of why computers can’t be trusted

Sony: hacker has stolen PSN user account data

Sony has been silent on the cause of the long PSN outage other than to say there was an external intrusion. But now the company has decided to admit the breach experienced wasn’t without consequence.
The PlayStation Network was hacked on or just before April 17. Then from April 17-19 user account information was accessed by the hacker. The information taken included user names, addresses, e-mail addresses, birthdates, and PSN & Qriocity login IDs and passwords as well as your password security answers.
The fact login details have been compromised explains why Sony took the decision to take PSN offline completely. Sony don’t believe credit card details were accessed, but Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications for SCEA is advising your credit card number and expiration may have been accessed in some instances.
Sony is advising everyone with an account check their bank statements and be very cautious of any communications received as it may be a scam. When PSN and Qriocity are restored Sony also advises we all change our account passwords immediately to stop any further problems.
As for who breached the system, Sony has yet to track them down, but an external security firm has been employed to help find out who did this.

11 Things to Avoid When Using Twitter

Twitter is becoming much more mainstream as time goes on. I do not mean to say that these celebrities are mainstream, but their audiences are. Since Oprah joined Twitter, you can be sure that hundreds of thousands of “stay-at-home moms” across America have begun tweeting. There are of course endless debates surrounding this topic and whether this is a good or bad development, but one thing’s for sure, there are now many new people joining Twitter who have no idea what they are doing.

1:  Do not use the following words in your bio, no matter how much you think they will attract followers:
-Social Media Expert: I think it is safe to say these are the three most annoying words on Twitter. What is a Social Media Expert can someone please explain to me? I am of the opinion that very few people can honestly call themselves experts in the field. The remaining 99% are people who have been using Twitter for a few months, have a few hundred followers, and are as much of an expert on social media as I am on Yoga (never done Yoga).
-Guru: The same pretty much applies to the word Guru. Unless your name is Jeff Pulver or possibly Kevin Rose, and you write that you are a Web 2.0 guru, you can rest assured you will not see me on your followers list. Humility is the key.
-Make Money Online: People are mostly on Twitter to participate in dialog. People who write these words in their bio are just like email spammers, and beyond the annoyance, and the fact that they are single handedly ruining Twitter, they are also doing something immoral and wrong. I can safely say that without exception, these words should never be in anyone’s Twitter bio.
-Affiliate Marketing: Now this is a tricky one. There is nothing inherently wrong with affiliate marketing. It is a legitimate way of making money online. However, to put it in proportion, Viagra is also a legitimate aphrodisiac, that does not mean I would ever open an email with the word Viagra in it. So too, most people on Twitter would not follow someone with the words Affiliate Marketing in their profile.
-Increase your Followers: If you are telling me ways to increase my followers, you obviously have very little confidence in my intellectual ability or at the very best, my social skills. I do not want to be told who to follow and as one of my Twitter mentors told me in response to a question posted on Twitter, I do not want to follow random people. I want to follow people that interest me, and the basic assumption is that the people they conduct dialog with, will also interest me. Thank you Ahuva (follow her, she is the cream of the crop.)
2:  Do not ONLY answer the question “What Are You Doing” in your tweets: Maybe this is how Twitter started, but I think we can all agree that nobody wants to hear when you are eating, when you are going to sleep, and when (yes this has been tweeted on occasion) you are going to the bathroom. Now let me clarify; I am not saying that it is unacceptable to talk about what you are eating for lunch, and even post a picture of it, this kinda thing makes Twitter interesting and fun. However, I think if that is ALL a person tweets about, they will end up with very few followers, who might be true food enthusiasts. A guiding rule when tweeting is tweet things that would interest you if tweeted by others. In fact, I think it is time to change the Twitter box from “What are you Doing”? to possibly “What Can you Share”? or as a true social media expert suggested, just a simple “What’s up?”
3:  Do not ONLY promote your blog/business in your tweets: Once again, the main word here in “only”. In my humble opinion, there is nothing wrong with sharing your blog posts with your followers. If they follow you, they are apparently interested in your thoughts, and your blog can be viewed as an extension of your tweets, so why not share it? However, just like everything else, all in moderation. If I come across someone’s Twitter timeline and all his tweets start with the word “New blog post”, can you guess what my first action would be?
4:  Do not tweet the same thing more than twice in a day: There are some people on Twitter who I actually look up to and respect, but feel it is OK to tweet the same article ten times throughout the day. Now, there is something to this technique. After all, the people reading it in the morning are generally not the same people reading it in the evening. This is true, but there is one little problem. When you tweet the same article or link many times throughout the day, you are not taking the heavy Twitter addicts into account. There are enough people who will see all those tweets and get annoyed fast. If you MUST tweet the same link more than twice, at least change the lead in sentence. I must give props to yet another one of my Twitter mentors on this tip. Thanks Ezra.
5:  Do not tweet about your followers more than once a week: OK, here I must stress something. I was an offender of this rule for a little while when I was new to Twitter. I was put in my place by another fellow Twitterer, who by the way, happens to be one of my favorite bloggers. Check out her Twitter here and her blog here. So thanks Talia, I still think you need to publish a book from your blog. What I mean to say here is do not tweet things like “I have 5,000 followers, and I really want to get to 6,000, please RT this”. This is really annoying especially if you do it often. It is not the end of the world if you are at 99,999 and you tweet “Free iPhone for my 100,000th follower”, but beyond that, please refrain.
6:  Do not tweet exclusively in another language: OK, this one is gonna spark some controversy, and rightfully so. I strongly believe you need to speak the language that most people understand. I am not saying if your mother tongue is Spanish to NEVER tweet in Spanish, I am just saying to be considerate of your followers and the fact that as of today, there are still a lot of applications that only support English text.
7:  Do not tweet sensitive/private information: Once again, I am speaking from experience and learning from my mistakes. As recently as yesterday, I tweeted something that was not for certain eyes, while thinking “Eh, they wont see it anyway”. Mistake, big mistake! Tweets now show up in Google searches and anyone can easily access your tweets. So if you want to keep something private, probably not the best idea to share it on the fastest growing social network on the Web. Additionally, and I am not going to elaborate on this, being as it is a very controversial topic, and I am actually not completely sure what I believe, but I do think Twitter should be treated like a work place. Just like you would not share extreme political views, sexist, or offensive views of any kind at an office event, so to Twitter. It is all about sensitivity. I am sure a lot of you disagree, feel free to share your opinion in the comments.
8: Do not Auto DM people who follow you: Well, this has got to be one of the bigger annoyances in the Twittersphere, thank the Lord, many of my friends taught me how to disable this inconvenience. If someone followed you, they did not do it for you, they did it for them, so no need to thank them. Do not DM them saying “Nice to meet you and thank you for following”. I get one of those messages and you better prepare a goodbye reply too.
9:  Do not Auto Follow: Once again, just my humble opinionUnfortunately, there are too many bots, spam accounts, and just annoying people on Twitter. Just because someone follows you, does not necessarily mean you have to or want to follow them back. In fact, I would say that maybe 30%-40% of the people that followed me over the past month were real people, with quality tweets on topics that interest me. Follow people that interest you, otherwise you will end up with an uncontrollable amount of people in your stream, which will eventually detract from your ability to use Twitter effectively.
10:  Do not consistently make spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes in your tweets:This is consistent with my general philosophy on Twitter specifically and social media in general. Just like I would not follow a person who could not be bothered to upload a picture to his/her profile, post a bio, or tweet at least a few times, so to I am not quick to follow someone who constantly makes elementary mistakes in their tweets. Now, I know this sounds a little harsh, but I think your followers deserve that extra effort. I am not saying you need to be a professional English writer, but c’mon, what interface does not include a spell check? Use it and be careful how you tweet.
11: Do not use Twitter like you use Facebook: I think it is an acceptable practice to check your Facebook once a day, week, or even month. Twitter needs more effort. It is true that you can use Twitter effectively even if you only tweet once a day. However, in my opinion, if you really want to maximize the tremendous potential that is Twitter, you need to keep your audience on their toes. Keep your followers interested.
